In FDM printing, the first layer is the contract between the model and the bed: if it "grabs" evenly, the chance of a successful print jumps sharply; if it starts peeling at the corners, every next minute of printing is a risk. That's where 3D printer adhesives come in—as a thin, predictable interlayer that stabilizes adhesion and makes surface behavior more consistent between individual prints.

The glue helps in two ways. First, it increases the adhesion of first lines on difficult surfaces (e.g. glass or "fatigued" PEI). When does it make sense to use glue?

Glue is mostly worth it when geometry and material "traps" you. Large, flat parts, long edges and sharp corners are classics for corner lift and warping. More heat-resistant shrink materials (such as ABS) like a stable first line and constant environment. There is also a more practical side: if you print often, the glue saves time from re-starts, re-levelling, experiments with the first layer and "hunting" for the right combination for the particular plate. Spray, stick or pen: how to choose the feel and control

The spray is the choice for speed and even coverage. You get a thin film over a larger area, which is convenient for large models or when you want an even start on a series of prints. This is also a good option if you frequently change the position of the model on the plate and don't want to "paint" an area by hand.

The stick is about precision and economy. Apply only where the model is in contact with the bed, without excess coverage of the entire build plate. This is handy for small parts, many separate parts on one plate, or when you want to avoid overspray around the printer.

The pen type of adhesive is between the two worlds: it gives the accuracy of a stick, but often has a more "engineered" behavior - for example, different adhesion according to the temperature of the bed. This type of adhesive is practical when you are printing ABS, polycarbonate or long prints and want predictable release control on cooling.

And specialized formulas (for example, for nylon) are a separate category: instead of universality, they give maximum stability precisely for the difficult material.

Surfaces: glass, PEI, textured and flexible plates

Glass is the "clean canvas" — easy to clean and flat, but often needs help to hold the first layer steady. PEI is usually a strong performer on its own, but over time it gets dirty, polished, or just hits a material/temperature combination that isn't ideal. Texture plates provide mechanical adhesion, but in some models with a small contact area or at higher temperatures, additional adhesive is still useful.

Flexible plates add another variable: they are easy to peel off, but can be less forgiving of an inappropriate first layer, especially with heavier/taller prints. The glue here is a way to make the grip permanent and reduce surprises.

How to apply glue so as not to spoil the first layer

The most common mistake is overdoing it. A thick layer of glue can leave a texture on the first layer and require more frequent cleaning. Much more effective is a thin, even coating and periodic refreshing, instead of "flooding" the plate.

Start with a clean surface. Finger grease, dust and remnants of old adhesive layers make the adhesion unstable. When spraying, it is important to work at a suitable distance and not to stay in one place. For compact sprays, a light layer and good ventilation are often recommended. With a stick/pen, apply evenly and calmly to the model area, then let it "set" according to the type of product.

After the print, cooling is part of the process. With stick, for example, separation becomes easier when the temperature drops low enough (even around/below 30°C according to specific instructions), and with many adhesives, cooling helps the part release without excessive force.
