PolyMax PLA

It is suitable for functional prototypes, housings, mounts, brackets, mechanical components, robotics and parts exposed to impacts or drops. It is especially useful when PLA's ease of printing matters but standard PLA is too brittle for the application.

The recommended nozzle temperature is 190–230°C, with a build plate at 25–60°C. The exact temperature depends on the printer, speed and part geometry; around 200–220°C is a useful starting point for most machines.

Polymaker's official recommendation is 40–60 mm/s. Other speeds may be possible depending on the printer, but starting within the official range is sensible when consistent mechanical performance is the priority. Maximum volumetric flow and speed in mm/s are different measurements: the actual limit also depends on the hotend, extrusion width and layer height.

No. PolyMax™ PLA can be printed on a standard open FDM/FFF 3D printer without a heated chamber or special modifications. Polymaker positions it as a material that provides high toughness while retaining PLA's ease of printing.

Yes. The official recommendation is to enable the part cooling fan. Active cooling helps produce clean overhangs, bridges and small details and is the standard starting point for PolyMax™ PLA.

The main difference is toughness. Standard PLA is stiff but relatively brittle and may fracture suddenly under a strong impact. PolyMax™ PLA is formulated to absorb considerably more energy and bend or deform before breaking. Its Charpy impact strength is around 38.9 kJ/m², which is a key reason to use it for more demanding functional parts.

PolyMax™ PLA remains a PLA-based material: high impact resistance does not mean high heat resistance. Its glass transition temperature is around 61°C, Vicat softening temperature around 62.4°C, and HDT approximately 52.3°C at 1.8 MPa and 54.5°C at 0.45 MPa. PC, ABS/ASA or a suitable engineering polyamide is a better choice for parts exposed to sustained high temperatures.
