PEI Build Plate for a More Reliable First Layer
BIQU Panda Build Plate Textured PEI x Textured PEI is a replaceable build plate for Bambu Lab 3D printers, designed for reliable first-layer adhesion and easy removal of finished models. It combines flexible spring steel with a textured PEI coating on both sides. This gives you two usable build surfaces with the same type of texture on a single plate.
This accessory is suitable for engineering workshops, product designers, educational laboratories, and home users who prefer a textured base on their parts. It can be used for functional prototypes, enclosures, brackets, and mounting components where reliable first-layer adhesion and easy part removal are an important part of the workflow.
Technology, Quality, and Surface Selection
In this version, both sides feature Textured PEI. The texture of the build surface transfers to the bottom of the model, creating a distinctive textured finish. This lets the underside of an enclosure, cover, or bracket contribute to the desired appearance, rather than requiring extra post-processing solely because of its texture.
Unlike the BIQU Panda Build Plate Textured PEI x Smooth PEI, this plate has no smooth build surface. The double-sided textured version is suitable when you primarily use Textured PEI and prefer to have the same type of surface available when you flip the plate. The choice between the two versions depends mainly on the finish you want on the bottom of the part.
The PEI coating works together with the printer settings, not in place of them. A clean surface, the correct build plate temperature, and a suitable filament profile are important for an even first layer. If you have adhesion problems, check these conditions first rather than compensating by pressing the material excessively against the plate.
Performance and Workflow
Place the plate on the magnetic base of a compatible printer and check that it is aligned correctly. There should be no filament residue or other particles between the two surfaces. In the slicer, select the Textured PEI setting and a profile suited to the material being used. Before an important print, check the first layer with a small test model.
BIQU’s recommended build plate temperature ranges for PEI are 50–60 °C for PLA and TPU, 70–80 °C for PETG, and 80–100 °C for ABS. These are starting ranges and should be adjusted to suit the specific filament and printer capabilities.
After 3D printing is complete, allow the build plate to cool. Remove the plate and, if needed, gently flex it to release the part. The flexible steel base allows you to remove parts without forcefully prying tools under the model. This is especially convenient when repeatedly producing similar components and keeping setup for the next job simple.
Compatibility, Materials, and Ecosystem
This version measures 257 × 257 mm. Compatible models include the Bambu Lab X1C, X1E, X2D, P1P, P1S, P2S, and A1. A separate 184 × 184 mm version is available for the A1 mini, so the 257 × 257 mm plate is not intended for that printer.
The PEI surface is suitable for PLA, PETG, TPU, ABS, and ASA. However, plate compatibility with a given material does not mean that all the listed printers have the same capabilities for printing it. For ABS and ASA, consider the temperature, conditions around the model, and whether a controlled print environment is needed. When choosing 3D printing filaments, follow the settings specified for the particular product.
The BIQU Panda Build Plate is a mechanical accessory and does not require its own software, drivers, or operating system. File formats and model preparation remain part of the printer’s and slicer’s usual workflow. The only required change is selecting the correct build surface and checking the settings associated with it.
Design, Ergonomics, and Everyday Use
The flexible steel construction makes it easier to remove, flip, and reinstall the plate. The two textured sides let you switch between surfaces without changing to a different type of finish. Handle the plate by its edges to limit contamination of the area where the model will be printed.
The 50 mm measurement grid provides a quick visual reference. It helps you estimate the size and placement of parts on the build plate, which is useful when comparing prototypes and preparing educational assignments. The grid is a visual guide and does not replace measurement with calipers or another suitable tool.
Professional Use Cases, Limitations, and Best Practices
- Functional prototypes: Produce holders, brackets, and mounting templates with a textured base to check shape and fit.
- Enclosures and covers: Use the textured finish as part of the appearance of the product’s underside.
- Small production runs: Remove finished components by allowing them to cool and carefully flexing the plate, reducing the need to pry them off mechanically.
- Educational laboratories: Work with two surfaces of the same type and a clearly traceable first-layer preparation process.
- Technical parts made from ABS and ASA: Use Textured PEI with correctly selected temperatures and suitable conditions for the material.
Contamination from fingerprints, dust, and material residue can reduce adhesion. If needed, clean the surface with warm water and a little dish soap, rinse, and dry thoroughly. Do not use acetone on the textured coating or leave the plate to soak for an extended period.
If adhesion is too strong, do not pull the model off the hot build plate. Wait for it to cool and release the part by gently flexing the plate. If the specific filament requires a release layer, use a compatible product according to its instructions. A suitable release layer also helps protect the build surface, not just improve adhesion.
Avoid sharp metal tools and excessive flexing of the plate. If the first layer remains uneven, check the alignment, cleanliness of the magnetic base, and printer calibration. Find complementary consumables and tools in the 3D printing accessories category.
