A textured PEI plate for first-layer adhesion
PrimaCreator Dual-Sided Textured PEI Plate combines a flexible stainless steel base with textured PEI on both sides for Bambu Lab X1, P1 and A1 printers. It is designed for everyday first-layer adhesion, straightforward maintenance and convenient part removal.
The usable area is 256 × 256 mm. A 0.5 mm steel base supports a 0.075 mm textured PEI coating, with surface heat resistance up to 180°C. This supports a range of standard and engineering filaments within the printer's own capabilities.
The texture creates an even contact surface and leaves a characteristic matte pattern on the underside of the part. This can be useful for visible undersides on housings, panels, mounts and functional prototypes. Both faces can be used as build surfaces.
PEI coating and first-layer quality
Textured PEI balances adhesion during printing with release after cooling. With the first layer correctly configured, material spreads across the texture, reducing the risk of local lifting at the start of a print.
This matters on parts with large footprints, long thin features or materials prone to thermal shrinkage. The plate cannot compensate for incorrect temperatures or unsuitable settings, but it provides a consistent working surface.
After cooling, remove the flexible steel plate from the magnetic bed and bend it gently if necessary. This reduces reliance on sharp removal tools and the risk of damaging the PEI. Allow it to reach 35°C or below for easier release.
Filament compatibility and bed temperatures
The plate can be used with PLA, PLA-CF, PLA-GF, PETG, PETG-CF, PET-CF, ABS, ASA, TPU, PVA, PC, PC-CF and PA-based materials. Engineering filaments must also match the printer's temperature limits, chamber conditions and the material's requirements.
- PLA / PLA-CF / PLA-GF: 45–60°C
- PETG / PETG-CF: 60–80°C
- ABS / ASA: 90–100°C
- TPU: 35–45°C
- PC / PC-CF / PA: 90–110°C
These ranges are starting points. Adjust for the filament, geometry, working environment and slicer profile. Under normal conditions, PLA, PETG, ABS and ASA generally do not require an additional adhesive layer. For TPU, PC, PC-CF and PA-based materials, an adhesive layer is good practice and may also act as a release layer to prevent excessive bonding to PEI. Keep moisture-sensitive engineering materials, especially PA, correctly dried and stored.
Daily workflow
Check the magnetic base before fitting the plate. Filament debris, dust or other particles beneath the steel can affect flatness. Position the plate correctly and inspect the PEI for dust, grease and remnants from earlier prints.
Select the bed temperature and first-layer settings in your Bambu Lab printer's slicer profile. The plate does not need separate software; STL and 3MF files are processed by the slicer and printer. It is compatible with Bambu's automatic calibration process when correctly positioned and clean.
After printing, let the plate cool to around 35°C or below. If the part remains attached, remove the plate and flex it gently. Avoid forcing a metal scraper or other sharp tool under the part.
Cleaning and maintenance
Fingerprints, dust and material residue can weaken adhesion even when printer settings are correct. Clean with water and a suitable detergent, rinse thoroughly and allow the plate to dry fully. Avoid touching the build area afterwards.
Do not use acetone on textured PEI, as it can damage the coating. If adhesion gradually declines and normal cleaning does not help, very fine sandpaper around 600 grit may be used carefully as a corrective procedure. It is not routine maintenance for a plate that is working normally.
PEI is a consumable surface and wears over time. Marks may develop in the nozzle-wiping area. Keep the main build area flat, clean and free from significant mechanical damage.
Application examples
- Functional prototypes: a consistent surface for successive design iterations.
- Housings and panels: a textured contact face as a finished matte surface.
- Engineering components: first-layer support for large footprints and shrinkage-sensitive materials.
- Small production runs: flexible steel assists removal between jobs.
- Mixed materials: one surface for a range of standard and engineering filaments.
- Print farms: a common plate type simplifies preparation, cleaning and maintenance.
