Controlled local finishing of 3D models
Modifi3D PRO2 is a heated tool for finishing, corrections and local processing of 3D-printed models. Its 12 interchangeable tips handle support remnants, edges, small holes, surface defects and functional details.
Controlled local heating softens and shapes the material with less mechanical force than cutting or sanding. This is useful around thin walls, small holes and complex geometry, where removing too much material can spoil the part.
Use it for cosmetic finishing and functional adjustments, including support cleanup, hole correction, edge shaping, smoothing, chamfers and preparing holes for metal inserts. It complements sandpaper, files and cutting tools; its main advantage is precise work on a selected area.
Temperature control from 160 to 480°C
Set the temperature using the body-mounted buttons and monitor it on the digital display. Short presses adjust it in 1°C steps; holding a button changes the setting faster.
Choose the lowest effective temperature for the material and operation. Excessive heat can soften a larger area than intended and change geometry or surface texture. Test on scrap or a hidden area first, use brief contact and avoid strong pressure.
With a suitable power supply, the tool reaches 200°C in less than 10 seconds, reducing waiting time between tasks. The displayed temperature refers to the heating element; temperature at the working tip can differ with tip size, shape and heat transfer.
12 tips for different tasks
- Knife: local cutting and removal of excess material.
- Needle: narrow areas and opening small holes.
- Smoothing: local surface smoothing and levelling.
- Scoop: shaping, string removal and concave areas.
- Detailing: precise work on small features.
- Blade: cutting wider areas and support remnants.
- Countersink: chamfers around holes.
- Insert Setting: installing metal inserts using heat.
- Large Scoop: larger-area work than the standard Scoop.
- Point: local corrections and precise shaping.
- Press: pressing and levelling softened surfaces.
- Chisel: straight edges, corners and local material removal.
The tips have a coating designed to reduce material sticking. They are also compatible with the earlier Modifi3D PRO. Protect the coating by removing residue gently without coarse abrasives or aggressive scraping.
USB-C power, display and workflow
Modifi3D PRO2 accepts USB-C PD/QC, with 5–20 V input and up to 60 W. It detects the available supply and adjusts output accordingly. A compatible PD/QC supply is required for full performance. A standard non-PD/QC adapter limits operation to 5 V, reducing heating speed and limiting achievable temperature to around 200°C.
Choose a tip and screw it into the heating module before powering the tool. Place it on its stand, connect power and wait for the selected temperature before starting.
Temperature calibration and adjustable standby are included. When the tool remains still for the selected period, it can lower its temperature automatically. Movement reactivates it and restores the last working setting. This is useful when work is interrupted for measuring, assembly or preparing the next part.
No software, application, driver or connection to a 3D printer is required. It can finish compatible printed parts regardless of the printer, slicer or operating system used.
Construction and safe handling
The stainless steel body has a silicone grip. The handle without a tip measures 19 × 17 × 123 mm and weighs approximately 40 g. Its compact size supports control around small features.
The one-piece heating module provides rigidity at the front of the tool and can be replaced without specialist tools. The included 1.5 m USB-C cable gives working space on a bench, and the stand holds the heated tool between operations.
Disconnect USB-C power and let the tip cool completely before changing it. Do not touch the hot tip or place it on heat-sensitive surfaces. Disconnect the tool when it is no longer needed.
Use the minimum effective temperature and work in a suitably ventilated area. If the material's response to local heat is unfamiliar, test on scrap before working on a finished model.
Practical applications
- Support cleanup: controlled removal of small remnants with cutting and detailing tips.
- Hole correction: Needle and Point for narrow holes and channels.
- Surface finishing: Smoothing, Scoop and Press for local unevenness.
- Heat-set inserts: Insert Setting for metal inserts in suitable thermoplastic parts.
- Chamfers: Countersink for countersunk screw holes.
- Repairs and modifications: small geometry adjustments without reprinting the whole component.
